How to Get Opaque vs. Transparent Resin Colors

Two pendants, same mold, same blue. One glows like stained glass when the light hits it. The other is a solid, confident, can't-see-through-it blue. Completely different pieces — and the difference has almost nothing to do with how much colorant you used.

It's about which colorant. This trips up almost everyone at the start, so let's untangle it properly.

What actually makes color transparent or opaque

Transparent colorants — resin dyes, alcohol inks — dissolve into the resin. Light passes through and comes out tinted. Think colored cellophane.

Opaque colorants are particles suspended in the resin. Light hits them and scatters or bounces back. Enough particles and no light makes it through at all. Think paint.

The trap: you cannot turn a transparent dye opaque by adding more of it. You'll get darker, then muddier, and then you'll hit the pigment ceiling where the cure starts to suffer — and light still passes through. I watched a maker at a market table explain she'd used half a bottle of blue dye trying to get a solid navy coaster. It cured (barely) into something like dark glass, not paint. Wrong tool for the destination.

Getting clean transparency

Resin dye is the purpose-built option — Castin' Craft transparent dyes are the ones on most US and Canadian craft-store shelves. One drop per 1 oz (30 ml) is often enough. Alcohol ink works too and brings its flowing behavior along.

The real skill with transparent color is restraint. The beauty is in light passing through, and every extra drop eats light. My rule: tint until you can just barely see color in the mixing cup against white paper. It'll look almost too subtle. In the cured piece, at full thickness, it'll be right — transparent color doubles in apparent depth when the piece has actual depth.

Suncatchers, "sea glass" pieces, anything for a window: transparent dye, thin dose, glossy mold. That combination does all the work.

Getting true opacity

Purpose-made opaque pigment — Castin' Craft again, or any liquid pigment labeled opaque. And the single most useful bottle in this whole category is plain white.

White is the opacity engine. A drop of white plus any transparent color = that color, opaque and pastel. More color, less white = richer but still solid. Nearly every solid color I pour is really "white + something."

There's a bonus effect: an opaque white or pastel base layer acts like a projection screen behind whatever you pour over it. Mica shimmer over an opaque base reads twice as bright, because the light bounces back through the shimmer layer instead of disappearing out the back of the piece.

The bottle-cap habit

Here's the mistake that taught me to test. Early on I made a batch of what I intended as translucent sage-green earrings — light through them, soft and glassy. I added "just a little" white to soften the green. Cured them, held them up, and they were solid mint-green blanks. Pretty! Not the product I'd photographed in my head, and not what matched the listing photos.

One drop of white in two ounces had flipped the whole batch from window-light to wall-paint.

Since then: every color mix gets tested in a bottle cap of resin before it touches a mold. Thirty seconds of pouring, and by the next day I have a cured chip showing exactly how that mix behaves at thickness. I keep the chips in a little tray, labeled in Sharpie — after a couple of years it's become its own reference library. Honestly one of the best tools in my studio, and it cost nothing.

Combining both in one piece

This is where it gets fun. Opaque and transparent layers in the same mold create depth you can't get any other way — a solid base with a tinted glass layer floating above it.

Classic combo: opaque white bottom layer, cure to gel stage (3–5 hours, timing guide here), then a transparent blue-green top layer. The result reads like shallow water over sand. Deep molds reward this most — 3/8 inch (10 mm) or more gives layers room to read as separate planes. Most of my pendant molds are cut with that depth partly for this reason.

Which do you reach for by default — see-through or solid? I notice beginners almost always start transparent (it feels more "resin-y"), then discover white pigment and never fully come back.
