Why Resin Sticks to Some Molds (And Not Others)

The whole appeal of silicone is that resin doesn't stick to it — so when a piece won't let go, or comes out tearing and tacky, it feels like the rule's been broken. Usually it hasn't. There's almost always a specific reason, and most of them have nothing to do with the mold being "bad." Let me walk through why resin sticks, in rough order of how often it's actually the cause.
Most common by far: it wasn't fully cured
Nine times out of ten, "it's stuck" really means "it's not done yet."
A piece that's still in the cure window is soft and a little tacky, so it clings, dents, and tears when you try to force it out. People get impatient — the surface feels firm, so they pull at the 6-hour mark — and then blame the mold. Give it the full demold time (often 24 hours, longer in a cold room), and the same piece releases clean.
So before anything else: wait longer. If it's sticky, it's probably under-cured, not stuck.

The resin itself was mixed wrong
If a piece never fully hardens — stays tacky or soft for days — it'll cling to the mold no matter how long you wait, because the problem is the resin, not the release.
A wrong ratio or under-mixing leaves resin that won't cure, and uncured resin is sticky resin. That's a mixing failure, and the fix is upstream — measure accurately, mix thoroughly, scrape the cup. A perfectly good mold can't release a piece that never properly set.
The mold is rigid, cheap, or wrong for resin
Now the mold's actual role. Resin releases from silicone because silicone flexes and resin won't bond to it. Take away the flex and you take away the easy release.
Rigid plastic molds, or very stiff cheap "silicone" that barely bends, make demolding a fight even with fully cured resin — there's nothing to peel back. Deeply detailed or undercut molds can also mechanically lock a piece in, where it's not bonded but physically trapped in the nooks; that's the rare case where a light mold release genuinely helps. And a mold meant for a different craft or a non-epoxy resin may simply not play nice with what you're pouring.
If a flexible silicone mold gives clean releases on simple shapes but fights you on an intricate one, that's the mold's geometry, not a defect.
Buildup and damage on the mold surface
Last, the slow creep. Over time a mold collects residue, and old release-agent film or general gunk can make releasing gradually harder. A gentle wash usually restores it. Heat damage from parking a torch too close can also rough up the surface enough to grab.
A clean, undamaged, flexible mold and a fully cured piece almost never stick — so when they do, work down the list.
The quick diagnosis
Honestly, here's my own mental order when something won't come out. First I ask: did I wait long enough? (Usually no.) Then: is the piece itself soft, meaning I mixed it wrong? Then: is this mold stiff or super-detailed? Then: is it just dirty? That order solves it almost every time.
I had a "cursed" mold once that kept tearing my pieces — I was convinced it was defective. Turned out I was demolding at eight hours in a cold winter room. Waited the full day, warmed the space, and it released perfectly. The mold was never the problem; my patience was.
